Forio
Forio: The beautiful Saracen Girl, where history meets nature
The municipality of Forio, west of the island of Ischia, is a very special place which has been blessed by nature, history and culture. Rich in ecological heritage that reaches from its large beaches to its green hills, all the way to the peak of Epomeo, this territory is a jewel box of history.
Walking through the streets of the town centre, where the beautiful noble palaces attract stares, you will discover the most ancient face of Forio when entering the majestic churches that preserve valuable paintings and treasures; you will be amazed walking through the alleys of the medieval quarters, where the watch towers built against the Pirates stand.
Here, in the centre of Forio, a cultural movement flourished in the 50’s and 60’s, bringing to the island artists such as Auden, Pasolini, Visconti, Capote, and many others. The great European Intellectuals met at Bar Maria, where they spent long hours discussing art, literature, and poetry.
Not to be missed during your holiday in Forio: The Church of Soccorso, white sentinel facing the sea, Citara Beach, hosting the large Poseidon hydrothermal park, the Gardens of La Mortella, a prized botanical park, considered to be one of the most beautiful in Italy, and the Torrione, hosting the collection of the Maltese artist.
